Suggest Treatment For Severe Back And Shoulder Pain

Posted on Fri, 10 Mar 2017
Question: My husband for the past 12 days has diffuse back pain mostly between his shoulder blades, but it does move around to the lower back as well. The back pain is awful and hydrmorphone hasn't touched it! My husband has not be able to work for days. his blood work shows a slightly elevated WBC 11.1, and he has elevated liver enzymes, so the pain management doc won't give him an epidural till we know if his liver is damaged. he now has developed the feeling of a heavy chest and difficulty taking a deep breath and is spiking fevers as high as 102. the doctor repeated blood work to make sure the liver enzymes are really elevated and not a lab error and we are waiting for those results. Any idea what he could have? We are very worried that there is no diagnosis and he is getting worse every day!

Brief Answer:
Can be muscle spasm and chest infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The diffuse back pain that your husband has can be a postural pain or due to a muscle spasm. This can best be relieved by an oral muscle relaxant hot compress and a local analgesic gel. Back strengthening exercises can help once the acute pain subsides. Taking only pain killers will not be sufficient.
A heavy chest fever and difficulty in taking breath can be related to a chest infection like pneumonia. This needs an X-ray chest and blood tests to confirm the diagnoses. Proper prescription antibiotics will help in bringing relief.
I hope this answers your query.
