Question: Hi I have suffered bad pmt all of my life. My periods are very irregular and my moods can be quite extreme. In my younger days i tried different contraceptive pills but suffered bad side effects so I just put up and shut up. I am also a very anxious person and in 2007 i had a nervous breakdown. At the moment i am on 20 mg citralopram which mostly helps with the depression and anxiety but I always feel so ill before I take a period and my anxiety can be through the roof at this time. Ive always suspected my anxiety issues are a hormonal problem but my doctor has never suggested any tests or hormonal treatments. Do you think this is something I should consider. I'm 35 now and even though I have a good understanding of my anxiety condition as ive attended Cbt and other workshops when it hits all that info goes out the window. I'm desperate to rid myself of this crippling anxiety. Any advice would be appreciated

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
Thanks for your query.
I can understand you are basically an anxious person and it is usual for such females to get more anxious before and during periods because of the effect of progesterone which causes depression as a side effect. Keep taking citalopram in prescribed doses. In my opinion you need some relaxation regimen like meditation or yoga. Cut your caffeine intake and indulge yourself in some hobby or a part time job as it will help you keeping your mind busy so less of thought process. Exercise is a very effective stress reliever so you might feel very much relieved after indulging in a regular exercise routine.
I wish you the best of health and peace of mind.
God bless you.
