Posted on Tue, 28 Jul 2015
Question: My 2 yr old son had fever and loose motions along with what appeared to be stomach ache. His pediatrician recomended crocin / meftal for the fever. For the loose motions he recomended rnifol for two days and in case there was no let up in the lm's flagyl 200. It is now 5 days since his lm's began and 2 days since i started the antibootic flagyl. The loose motions continue. He is active and has had no fever in the last 3 days.
What do i do to stop the motions? He is not eating properly and has thrown up atleast once everyday.

Brief Answer:
Looks like viral diarrhea - do not worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic.

It seems your kid is having viral diarrhoea. Once it starts it will take 5-7 days to completely get better.

THERE ARE MEDICINES TO STOP DIARRHEA ABRUPTLY. BUT THEY ARE NOT TO BE USED IN KIDS. THYE MAY COUSE COMPICATIONS. HIS APPETITE WILL IMPORVE ONCE DIARRHA STOPS IN ANOTHER COUPEL OF DAYS.

Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.

There is no need to use antibiotics like Flagyl unless there is blood in the motion. Antibiotics might worsen if unnecessarily used causing antibiotic associated diarrhoea.

I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops 1ml once daily for 14 days) & ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment. If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron (as prescribed by your paediatrician).

Regarding fever - Meftal-P contains Mefenamic acid which is a NSAID. It carries the risk of gastritis and renal problems in the long run. Please do not use Meftal-P.

Instead - Paracetamol can be given in the dose of 15mg/kg/dose (maximum ceiling dose of 500mg) every 4-6th hourly that too only if fever is more than 100F. I suggest not using combination medicines for fever, especially with Paracetamol.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish your kid good health.

Brief Answer:
Recovering kids eat gradually

Detailed Answer:
Hi....when any kid is recovering from viral illness or diarrhea the kid's appetite will gradually improve. So do not worry if the intake is less.

As per the diet advise -

1. Feed him all the seasonal fruits and vegetables.
2. Give him dal and rice with added ghee to it.
3. Give him plenty of water.
4. Avoid spicy foods and foods from outside.

I take this opportunity to tell you certain scientific facts and relieve your distress -
1. An active is a well kid even if he is not eating well.
2. Development of a kid is as important as or I would say even more important than growth alone.
3. As the kids grow their interest in food decreases and interest in play activities increases so that they eat small quantity and run away to play. As parents we need to be more patient and feed than less quantity but more aliquots per day.
4. This age rather than the quantity of the food I suggest you concentrate more on the number of times you feed him and also make whatever you feed him calorie dense by adding good amount of ghee to it.
5. I suggest you not to use appetite stimulants on long run as they may cause drowsiness.

Thank you for sharing these facts since my kid does seem less interested in food.

The motions are down to 5/6 per day with 1/2 of thse being completely watery and the rest of semisolid consistency.
Giving him zinc and enterogermina along with ors.
Plan to continue zinc for 10 days and enterogermina & ors for another 2/3 days. Trust that should be okay.

He likes banana and milk, both of which I have stopped givinghim due to the loose motions. Should I start that as well?
