Question: I am taking 15mg of Mirtazapine at night for sleep. I woke up at about 6 am with a panic attack. Should I take a xanax or should I take the 10 mg of buspar instead?

Brief Answer:
Xanax for immediate help for panic attack.

Detailed Answer:
Hello -

I'm sorry that no one has responded yet. For immediate relief of a panic attack, take the Xanax. Xanax is a benzodiazepine anti-anxiety medication that works quickly but for short term. Buspar is an anti anxiety medication that is typically given on an ongoing basis to be effective, rather than sporadically.

I am sorry you have panic attacks. That is rough. In addition to your medications, if you have not tried already, learning meditation/mindfulness practices can help calm a person overall too.

Also, if not previously checked, thyroid function (TSH and free T4 blood tests) are a good idea in someone who has ongoing anxiety disorder to make sure there isn't a treatable medical component going on.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
