What Causes Sleepiness, dizziness And Depression After Taking Mirtazapine?

I am 49, 5 9 and 190 pounds. I have been on 150 mg of sertraline for several years for depression. It helps, but I m still depressed when I wake up. So I am now on mirtazapine as well. I ve been on 15mg for five days. The side effects are sleepiness, dizziness, anhedonia, depression and vivid dreams. Last night I wet the bed for the first time since I was a child. Is this the mirtazapine? Will it happen often? How long will the side effects last?

Hi,

Mirtazapine is a medication used to treat depression and anxiety disorders by increasing the levels of certain chemicals in the brain, such as serotonin and norepinephrine. However, like any medication, it can cause side effects. The symptoms you are experiencing, including sleepiness, dizziness, anhedonia, depression, and vivid dreams, are all possible side effects of mirtazapine. Wetting the bed is a less common side effect, but it has been reported with the use of this medication.

It is not possible to predict how often bedwetting may occur or how long the side effects will last as it varies from person to person. However, it is important to talk to your doctor about these side effects and any concerns you have. If the side effects are severe or persistent, your doctor may adjust your dose or switch you to a different medication. It is important not to stop taking mirtazapine suddenly without consulting your doctor as this can cause withdrawal symptoms.

In summary, sleepiness, dizziness, anhedonia, depression, vivid dreams, and bedwetting are all possible side effects of mirtazapine. It is important to discuss any concerns or side effects with your doctor to determine the best course of action.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
