Question: Thanks for helping me with your answer. Inhave read That progesterone helps start a period but I am trying to stop mine it's been almost 2 months. Why would a 51 year old bleed for so long? It began after my doctor removed 2 polyps while performing a yearly pap.

Brief Answer:
Need proper evaluation and take following treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:

1) In this age group, irregular heavy bleeding may occur due to hormonal ups and downs, as a result of dysfunction of ovary and progesterone deficiency.

However, we need to rule out possible causes of this type of bleeding though two polyps are removed. These are as follows:

a) Endometrial atrophy (thinned out)
b) Endometrial hyperplasia (if any)
c) Others- adenomyosis, certain medicine, infection etc.

Do some basic investigations to pinpoint the diagnosis like FSH, estrogen level, thyroid profile, Trans Vaginal Ultrasound scan (TVS), Pap smear test (to detect cancerous changes) and endometrial biopsy.

2) In this case, progesterone therapy with Medroxyprogesterone acetate (like PROVERA) and Tranexamic acid will help to control bleeding. Progesterone cream will NOT much effective. You need to take complete prescription from doctor.

3) If progesterone therapy fails to control bleeding, you should proceed for D & C to get effective result.

Hope, I have answered your query. Wish your good health and take care.

Thank you so much. I have biopsies that's good and just had the pelvic transvaginal ultrasound yesterday so great suggestion. I was afraid progesterone would cause bleeding so I guess I will begin the prescription. I see my doctor Tuesday.
Is this heavy almost 2 month bleeding causing my light headed and anxiety?
