Question: My son, age 65 has experienced both severe hearing loss, impaired vision and poor balance.

I am sorry to hear about your son.

Most often hearing loss in aged persons is due to sensorineural denerative changes of the vestibulocochlear apparatus of inner ear, which is responsible for both hearing and balance. This is the likely cause of poor balance. You need to ask him to get an audiometry done. It will help in identifying the exact cause. Treatment will depend upon the cause. In case of sensorineural degeneration, there is not much to be done but use of ginkgo biloba extracts should provide some relief.

The impaired vision could be due to due to cataract or due to causes involving the retina. You need to get him evaluated by an ophthalmologist as he could point to the exact cause. Depending on that the treatment would ensue.
