Suggest Treatment For Headaches, Dizziness And Stomach Upset

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Apr 2015
Question: Thank you.
I thought I had the flu - headache, upset stomach, achy body. But I am questioning this. My primary symptoms are headache, dizziness (as in vertigo) and upset stomach. This is day 10. Is this usual? I am 58 years old and this is completely different than I have ever experienced.

Brief Answer:
The important thing is to diagnose first.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Welcome to health care magic,

Frankly saying,it would be slightly difficult to diagnose here in your case from only these symptoms like headache, bodyache, dizziness and gastric upset since 10 days.

Can you tell me any other symptoms (apart from above) like fever, vomiting, altered bowel habit, ear pain/discomfort?

Also,It would be better if you can tell me any other past history of any disease or medication or surgery.

The possible causes I could suggest according to your age are acute gastritis or indigestion or tension headache or sinusitis or ear problem.

You can go for routine blood investigations,ESR and urinalysis.

Treatment is mainly based on the underlying cause. However you can take symptomatic treatment like,
analgesic (if cause is not gastritis),
antacids like ranitidine or pantoprazole or rabeprazole,
antihistamines like betahistine or cinnarizine.

I can't comment on homeopathy treatment as I am a allopathy doctor but if you still have not been relieved from the symptoms, then I would advise you to see your family physician for detailed history and thoroughly clinical examination to get the diagnosis first.

Treatment will depend upon the correct diagnosis.

Thanks and Regards,

Thank you for your multiple considerations.

Unfortunately, I no longer have health insurance or I would have gone in to see my primary care physician for diagnosis and treatment.

The intestinal distress is gone. The bigger issue is the headache and dizziness. Though I have had vertigo - more than a dozen years ago - never have I been affected with this headache and dizziness for such a lengthy time, even again this morning.

As far as medical history: 58 years old, bp normally 120/70, resting heart rate between 55-60. I am 60 pounds overweight, 5'10". Last year head a-fib, had to be sedated and have my heart shocked back into rhythm. Now take /2 Atenolol each evening. I take Levothyroxin each am, 1 - 80 mg aspirin each am and Famotadine - for acid reflux. I have sever challenges with my left eye: had cataract removed, glaucoma, cornea failure with a process to scar it - now blind in my left eye.

If this does not respond soon, I will go to a healthy clinic for more assistance.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
It could be either migraine or vestibular problem like labyrinthitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Thanks for the follow-up query.

I totally understand your concern and can empathize with the pain you are going through. But I need you to kindly understand the limitations of a e-physician.

Anyway,If your stomach or intestinal problem has subsided and you have headache and dizziness since 10 days then the best possible and common cause could be either migraine or labyrinthitis/vestibular problem.

1) Migraine is a recurrent headache associated with either nausea, vomiting or photo-phobia or dizziness.

Generally it occurs at only one side of head and characterized by pulsating over head and may not be relieved by OTC analgesics.

This type of headache may last for few hours to some days depending on triggering or precipitating factor like dehydration, heavy sunlight exposure, sleep deprivation, wrong or uncomfortable posture, eye strains, stress, long working hours in one position etc.

You may take OTC analgesic (ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac) with antihistamines like betahistine (16mg) or cinnarizine (75 mg) which suits you and take bed rest or sleep with muscle relaxant and antacid which you are already taking for gas trouble.Try to avoid contact with precipitating or triggering factor if there is any.

You might require ergotamine, sumatriptan, antidepressants like amitriptilline if over the counter analgesics fails.

If it is not relieved in-spite of taking treatment then you can see neurologist and undergo clinical examination, routine blood investigations, electroencephalogram or CT brain but only after neurologist advise.

2) To rule out vestibular problem or labyrinthitis you must consult ENT specialist and ask for the appropriate treatment.

We here on this platform provide only general information and it should not be relied upon as a completely, thorough assessment and treatment because here we have to rely only on the available history and descriptions by the users in their own language and terminology.

So,You must consult your nearest physician before acting on any advise provided here as it is a universal e-patient policy.

I have tried my best to give complete information regarding your problems, its diagnosis and treatment.

Thanks and Regards,
