Suggest Treatment For Bladder Infection And Enlarged Prostate

default
Posted on Wed, 3 Jun 2015
Question: my husband (78yr. old) has a bladder infection - was started on cipro this morning and had one tonight also. He has probably had this for a month and during that time has had episodes of spiking a temp along with the chills which last about 15 min. with very intense shaking all over and gagging - he can hardly talk he is shaking so very hard. The nurse practitioner did not draw blood this morning - should I take him in the morning to have blood drawn to see what his electrolytes are (I've been pushing fluids) but fear he is probably dehydrated and am thinking maybe he needs a bag of fluids. He never complained to me about burning or pain when voiding until today when I asked him direct - he just said this past month hes been having frequency and I thought it might be an enlarged prostate. He has an appointment with his primary Dr. the first of XXXXXXX and thought we'd wait until then to discuss it until I realized today that he has a bladder infection which has by now gone to his kidney.

Brief Answer:
UTI

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.
Hi, I am Dr Anshul Varshney , I have read your query in detail , I understand your concern.
Fever with Chills with frequency and burning in urine is most commonly due to Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) which needs evaluation of the cause, so that he doesn't get the repeat episodes.
The most common causes of UTI are Diabetes, Stones in renal tract and Prostate Enlargement.
Yes, UTI and Sepsis can cause severe dehydration leading to electrolyte imbalances. He needs an Ultrasound Abdomen and Urine culture. No antibiotics should be started before giving a sample of urine culture, otherwise the report can be affected.
Once the sample is taken your doctors will start him on antibiotics and will modify the antibiotics based on the urine culture and sensitivity report which takes 72 hours.
Ultrasound will also rule out any Prostate enlargement and treatment would be decided based on the size and echo-texture of the prostate.
His blood sugars should be checked and if found high, he would require medicines for that.
Also, he should be given Intravenous fluids to fight with the dehydration.
This is my personal opinion based on details available here.
If you still have any other query, you may please ask me.
Stay Healthy.
