Brief Answer:
It can be paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnoea

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for writing through HCM.

I have read your query and understood your concerns.

First of all tell me Do you have any heart problem? Any lung disease? Are you on any antihypertensive drugs? Did you have heart attacks in the past?

I feel whatever you are experiencing is the Paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnoea. Paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea (PND) is a sensation of shortness of breath that awakens the patient, often after 1 or 2 hours of sleep, and is usually relieved in the upright position.

It develops when a person's heart is not capable of pumping extra blood in recumbent position [lying down]. Possible causes of PND are:
1. Left ventricular disease in heart [failing left ventricle of the heart]
2. Decreased responsiveness of the respiratory center in the brain and
3. Decreased adrenergic activity in the myocardium [heart muscles] during sleep.

I here suggest you to go for cardiac evaluation with EKG and echocardiogram. If possible you should visit a cardiologist. Chest xray PA view should also be done.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have further problem then I will be happy to help.
Wish you good health.
