Suggest Remedies For Oozing Incision Post An Branchial Cleft Cyst Surgery

Posted on Wed, 22 Jun 2016
Question: I'm looking for an ENT specialist. My 6 month old had surgery to remove a 3rd branchial cleft cyst. The glue came off tonight and we are shocked as heck to see that the oozing pore is still there, about 1/2 away from the incision. And still oozing. I was told it was an ellipical incision which i thought would be AROUND the pore. We are very confused and upset.

I'm sorry... 2nd branchial cleft

The discharge will soon settle down.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Sir.

I can certainly understand your concerns.

I have worked through your query and can certainly extend my professional advise to you.

I have seen the attached images.

There seems to be serous/watery discharge.

This discharge is expected in the immediate perioperative period.

This discharge will soon settle down and the pire will close on its own.

Since the post op appointment with your doctor is on Thursday, you can wait till that time.

Post your further queries if any.
Thank you.

I guess I don't understand why there is still discharge from the pore/ sinus. I thought that is what was being removed. I understand the incision on the left would still be healing, BUT I DO NOT understand why the pore would still be excreting discharge if the Branchial cleft was removed. That is what it has done his entire life, Is discharge clear fulid. Nothing has charged.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Wait for 1 week for spontaneous resolution

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Madam.

I can understand your concern.

This discharge is a clear fluid.

Some degree of discharge post surgery is inevitable.
This doesn't mean that cleft is intact or not being removed.

In case if the fluid still persists after 1 week, then it's time to have sinogram or fistulography to assess the sinus tract.

As of now you need not worry.

This discharge should subside in 1 week.

Post your further queries if any.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Fistulogram may help

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Madam.

In such a case, it's advisable to get a fistulogram for further assistance.

Please check with your surgeon if he can offer this test to your child.

This test can tell if there is any remnant cleft tissue.

Post your further queries if any.

Thank you
