Question: Hi Doctor,

My baby just turned to 2 months yesterday and breast milk is not be sufficient for her and starts crying every time after feed, So I have started feeding Lactogen 1 after breast feeding and this got habituated her to bottle feed(easy to swallow) and refusing to take breast milk.
When consulted her doctor, She advised me to feed cerelac after 3 months.
You can please advise when to start solid food and also Is formula milk better or feeding cerelac for her after 3 months?
And one more question at the time of birth she was around 3.5kgs and now she is 4.5kgs.Is that a health growth in her second month?

Thanks in Advance!

Regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Suggestion on feeding

Detailed Answer:
Hi.....it is very usual for babies to forget breast feeding once bottle feeds are started.... For the same reasons you have quoted.
Suggestions -

1. Try reacclimatizing her for breast feeding... But this will be very difficult.
2. Do not start Cerelac by 3 months... Its too early the tender gut of infant will not tolerate it at 3 months.
3. If baby is refusing breast feeds - the only option is formula milk- but give it in correct dilution and not by bottle, but by spoon or paladey.
4. Her current weight gain is slightly on the lower side, so continue formula feeds on top of breast feeds. This I have calculated as 1000g weight gain in 45 days as in the initial 2 weeks the babies lose 10% of body weight and regain it.
5. I suggest you weigh her again in another 15 days and get back to me.

Brief Answer:
Feeding suggestions

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Greetings from XXXXXXX

1. The usual recommended intervals are 2 hours. So you need to feed the baby once in 2-3 hours. If the baby is awake by 2 hours, feed her. But if she is sleeping wait till 3 hours and if still sleeping, then gentle wake her up and feed her.

2. Babies of this age usually sleep up to 18 hours per day.

3. You need to start solid feeds or complimentary feed only at 6 months of age.

4. At this age you can start giving Cerelac stage one rice or Nestum rice stage 1 etc. All are same in calories and energy. Only thing is palatability which is subjective for each kid.
Other home-made food options will be -
a. Daal and rice well cooked and made into a porridge along with ghee
b. Boiled apple or banana and mashed into a paste.
c. Any made cereal porridge preparation with additional ghee added.

Remember certain principles like -
a. Add one food material / cereal or fruit per week. This will be useful because if he develops vomiting or diarrhoea, we will know what to avoid.
b. Add vegetables and fruits made into a paste surely to avoid constipation.
c. Do not add too much sugar as it may cause diarrhoea.
