Is It Safe To Have Contraceptives For PCOD?

default
Posted on Sat, 11 Apr 2015
Question: My wife was detected with PCOS some years back and she is taking contraceptive medicines for past 3 years. Is there any harm for taking this medicine for such long time? She left this medicine in the middle for 4 months which resulted in irregular periods and lot of acne on face. So she restarted taking this medicine upon doctor's advice. Recent ultrasound suggests no cysts in the ovary. Her height is 5'2" and here weight is 52kgs. I think her weight is ok though she is doing regular exercises/yoga to reduce the weight to 50kgs. Recent blood tests also said everthing normal, including normal insulin level, normal bp and normal thyroid. The issue is that her face is still filled with lot of acnes and some facial hair as well. What should be our next steps to control this acne occurence?

Brief Answer:
precautions advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir, thanks for trusting health care magic.
PCOD is a hormonal imbalance which is difficult to cure and can only be kept under control.
It resolves by itself after menopause only.
She should continue taking oral pills which will regulate her cycle and will control her acne resurgence.
For control of acne in addition she can try following measures -
- avoid oil based creams on face and and hair
- avoiding picking acne
- use a good face wash with salicylic acid (speelac is a good option)
- repeatedly wash her face daily at regular intervals
- can try dermabrasion which will help in dealing with old scars and prevent new acne formation
- always cover your face in case she drives a two wheeler
- local application of antibiotic cream with clindamycin and benzoic acid.
For excessive hair on face best is laser treatment so visits dermatologist and she will be relieved of excessive hairs forever.
Take care
