Is Irregular Vaginal Spotting A Symptom Of Perimenopause?

default
Posted on Tue, 11 Aug 2015
Question: I am 50 years old. My periods are still regular, although the duration and intensity has changed. Previously my periods would last 5 days with heavy bleeding for most of 3 days. Now my periods last 7 days with heavy bleeding (although not as heavy as when I was younger) for a day or two with much lighter to end. Sometimes day 6-7 is taken care of with a panty liner or only shows when I wipe after urination. I finished my period on Friday, July 17th. Monday when I urinated, there was light red blood on the toilet tissue. That continued periodically throughout the day. I wore a panty liner, but nothing on it. Yesterday, nothing. This morning I had an orgasm through clitoral stimulation only, and when I went to the bathroom afterwards, there was the blood again...light like before, but with a little cramping. Is this most likely just another fun event associated with menopause, or should I be worried? I tend to worry...and research on the internet...a little too much. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Get internal examination and ultrasound of uterus done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani.
I will be answering your concerns today.

Due to hormonal variations in the peri menopause age one may find such irregular bleeding/spotting vaginally. But hormones are blamed only after other conditions are excluded.
Since you have not mentioned about vaginal discharge/itching it is not due to infection.
A uterine/cervical polyp can cause such vaginal bleeding. Therefore I suggest that you consult your Gynecologist for internal examination and ultrasound of uterus and ovaries. If you are due for Pap smear get that done to. If the endometrium (lining of uterus) appears excessively thick on ultrasound your doctor will take biopsy from it and send it to lab to see if there is any abnormality.

I hope this helps.
If you have further concerns, I will be happy to answer.
