Is TSH Value Of 0.216 L A Cause For Concern?

Question: Hello Dr. Rynne,

I have just received a prescription for levothyroxine from my doctor because my ultrasensisitive TSH was low (0.216 L with normal range of 0.5 - 4.7 uiu/ML). All other thyroid levels were normal.

Is this correct? I am reading that levothyroxine is prescribed for hypothyroidism and that low TSH indicates hyperthyroidism.

Thank you!

Brief Answer:
You are correct.

Detailed Answer:
Good day

Noted your concern. I guess Dr.Ryne is not available to take your question. so it appeared as open question. You are correct. your thyroid profile indicates subclinical hyperthyroidism and doesn't warrant treatment with levothyroxine now. Do you have any symptoms now?

If you are asymptomatic, the best way is to wait and recheck the thyroid blood works after a month and if TSH is still low, then to do a nuclear scan (Technitium uptake scan). Treatment can be decided based on that.

Binu
