default
Posted on Mon, 20 Oct 2014
Question: Hi..am 34 years old married. I started gym work out in july. After that I didn't get my periods for 2 months. Then in the third month I started bleeding normal but it was almost for 12 days. I was suggested pause 500 which I took for 2 days and stopped.
I will be traveling for 15 days from November 1st and my periods are yet to start. I would like to prep one. Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
Postpone of period is best in this case.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:

1) Irregular late period may be due to Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease, hormonal imbalance, thyroid disturbance (Hypothyroid), high prolactin level, mental stress, emotional upset, pelvic infection, irregular diet pattern, over weight etc.

It should be treated properly through clinical examination and necessary investigations after consultation with your gynecologist.

2) In this case, I suggest you to POSTPONE or DELAY your period for 15 days (in next month) from the day of traveling.

It is quite SAFE and EFFECTIVE method in comparison to PREPONING your period because you CAN'T predict withdrawal bleeding within given time frame. It may be delayed or earlier which can mess your scheduled planning or traveling to some extent.

3) I suggest you to take Norethisterone pill (like Primolut-N) to delay your period in the next month. It should be taken twice daily 3 days prior to period due date or journey date and continued as long as you want to delay (max 2 weeks). You will get a withdrawal bleeding like period within 5-7 days after stopping them.

4) You should AWAIT for coming period naturally in this month. Take healthy LOW carbohydrate diet, control or reduce body weight effectively by regular physical exercise, avoid mental stress by regular meditation or yoga and maintain genital hygiene properly. It would help to regularize your period.

Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish your good health and take care yourself.

Thank you very much for the early reply.
This irregularity in periods started after I started exercising...I never had any issues in this regard and I do not have thyroid issues and my weight is perfectly fine.

Is this normal? Is my gym workout the cause for the irregularity? Should I stop working out? Or should I wait for some more time for it to come to normal?

Brief Answer:
Period irregularity is normal after Gym Workout.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for follow up queries.

1) If you have observed that irregular period starts following Gym Workout, then I suggest you to do LIGHT exercise and free hands only.

2) Heavy or vigorous exercise may lead to change in Hypothalamus - Pituitary- Ovarian axis, causing hormonal imbalance and late irregular period.

3) You should continue LIGHT exercise and await for few months till your body is adjusted physiologically, after which you will get regular period.

Hope, I have answered your all queries. Kindly, close the discussion.

All the best and good luck.

Regards,
Dr S Patra
