Does Delay In Taking Rigevidon Pill Reduce Its Effectiveness?

default
Posted on Fri, 31 Oct 2014
Question: Hello,

My girlfriend was on the last week of her packet of Rigevidon contraceptive pill. She was 13/14 hours late taking one pill (approx 11pm instead of 9am), but took one when she realised, and carried on as normal the next day. She then started a new pack without a break as advised in the leaflet. Are we covered against conception?

Brief Answer:
Probably yes.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney.
I understand your concern.
She took a good decision to take the pill as soon as she realized that she had skipped one and now carrying with the usual routine dose.
In such conditions we also advise what she did.
I appreciate her awareness.
As far as contraception methods are concerned no method gives you 100% guarantee not even contraceptive pills. So in case she conceives we can't say she did because of that skipped pill.
In general, she is safe. Its highly unlikely that she will face failure of contraceptive pills just because of this missed dose.
So don't worry.
If you have any further query you may please ask me.

Thank you Doctor for your advice. I think we are both quite worrying individuals so wanted to be safe. We went to an emergency clinic and they said we had nothing to worry about in all truth, but still I worry about these things. How approximate is the 'more or less than 12 hours' guidelines if you miss a pill? e.g. less than 12 hours - just carry on as normal, more than 12 - start a new pack. We started a new pack, but how liberal are these 12 hour boundaries? Thanks again

Detailed Answer:
I understand concern of you both.
The 12 hour guidelines are based on studies done on thousand's of people. Its not a land mark.
Everyone reacts differently.
Personally speaking with professional knowlegde and not just professionally I don't find any reason to worry.
