default
Posted on Mon, 10 Nov 2014
Question: My mother - 89 year old had a shot of prolia last year. Shortly after all her teeth moved towards the front of her mouth, with some jaw/face pain. Could this be a result of the prolia? Several Dentist have not been able to determine the cause. Her Doctor now wants to give her another shot of prolia and she is concerned.

Brief Answer:
It could be a result of the Prolia

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thank you for using Healthcare Magic. Yes, the problem could have been caused by the Prolia. An uncommon side effect of the drug is osteonecrosis of the the jaw. What this means is the bones in the jaw degenerate. This could then cause the teeth to loosen and move around, and for her to have pain.

Have the dentists examined her for bone loss in her jaws? This can be done by a certain type of x-ray that dentists commonly do. If this is definitely diagnosed, then it would be best that she no longer take the Prolia.

If her problem is osteoporosis (bone thinning), then there are many alternatives to Prolia. She can ask her doctor about another med. This probably should be done regardless of what the dentists find. Why take further chances with Prolia when you have other choices?

Hope this answers your query. If you have further questions, I would be happy to answer them.
