Can Nardil Be Taken For Anxiety And Depression?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Jan 2016
Question: I suffer from extreme depression and anxiety along with ocd. I also am hypersexual. I don't seem to respond to any of the ssris in treating my depression but paxil did help my hypersexual disorder. I still have extreme anxiety and depression and the only medication that has ever helped me with that was nardil. My doctor has weaned me off of paxil and now my sex drive is coming back. I am supposed to be going back on nardil but I remember that it increased my sex drive when I was younger. I don't know if I'm bipolar or just have a mood disorder. my question is should I try the nardil?

Thanks so much for your question.

It sounds like Nardil was very effective for treating your anxiety and depression. This is great news. I think given its effectiveness you should definitely stick with the Nardil. We can address the hypersexuality separately.

It may be that it was not the Paxil that was helping your hypersexuality, instead it may have been Abilify. Abilify functions as a mood stabilizer and can tamp down on hypersexual symptoms. I would recommend taking Nardil and Abilify together. Another alternative is to take the Nardil and address the hypersexuality not with Abilify but with an alternative such as Lithium, Depakote, or Risperdal. The bottom line is that Nardil works for you -- we can manage hypersexuality if it becomes a problem with other drugs.
