4 Month Son, Loose Motion. One Test Revealed Gram Negative Bacteria, Another Nothing. Taking Antibiotic. Treatment?

Hi! My son is about to be 4 months and he has been suffering loose motion for about 2 weeks now. One stool test revealed something like entameaba histolysta (cyst++), something like that I don't have the report now, and pus cells between 70-80. I made two specimen of stool culture, one revealed nothing and the other revealed gram negative bacilli. The doctor prescribed an antibiotic and intestinal antiseptic. I gave him the medication for a week but the loose motion is still there and he is loosing weight.

Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Your child is having an infectious diarrhea with a gram negative bacteria.

The infection usually responds to a sensitive antibiotic and loose motions will decrease.

In spite of a week of antibiotic course, the loose stools are still persisting means your son require reevaluation and reassessment to consider antibiotic by intravenous route.

At the same time stool to be tested for routine and for reducing substances to look for any development of lactose intolerance.

Probiotic and zinc can be added to his treatment with the doctor prescription.

Consult your Pediatrician again for reassessment and further management.

Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

It is very unusual for 4 month old to have Entamoeba hystolytica in the stool.
Is your baby breast fed or not?

Give exclusive breast feeding to prevent such infections till your baby is 6 months old.

Get a repeat stool investigation done at a reliable laboratory.


Monitor for signs of dehydration.
They include
1. Decreased skin turgor
2. Increasing thirst.
3. Sunken eyes.
4. Irritability.
5. Drowsiness.
6. Decreasing passage of urine
