I would say diet rich in vitamin D and calcium is more useful in preventing degenerative diseases. I do not encourage using vitamin and mineral supplement pills for prevention. I believe those drugs should be used only for proven deficient state.

No, unless associated nutritional deficiency is present. Degenerative arthritis of back could be due to nutritional deficiency, poor posture and no exercises to strengthen the back. Presently physiotherapy and mild exercises with calcium rich diet could be helpful. Thanks.
