Would Intake Of Rifampin Affect The Fetus?

Hi Dr. Rynne my daughter just found out that she is pregnant . We are so excited she s been married for a year and a half. She has been on Rifampin because, she has had lymes disease since high school and she s 28 now and the dr. Thinks this drug will help her get rid of the lymes disease. Dr. Rynne how dangerous is this to the fetus. She only took the drug for 5 weeks and of course, stopped the drug. I hear it can be very dangerous for the fetus. Please give me your feed back on this . Thank you.

OBGYN, Maternal and Fetal Medicine 's  Response
Hi dear, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Rifampicin is a pregnancy category C drug.
It means that the animal studies with this drug has shown adverse effects on the fetus like the congenital anomalies (spina bifida); however no controlled studies have been done in the humans.
This drug should be given when the benefit of giving the drug to the mother exceeds the risks associated with it.
If she need rifampicin to keep her disease in remission, then the drug can be continued.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
