Will Taking Marvelon Prevent Pregnancy?

I had unprotected sex yesterday with my husband yesterday nite and my fertile date is bewteen 20/1 to 25/1. Consulted doctor this morning and he gave Marvelon , asked me to take two tablets now and two tablets after 12 hours. Will this give assurance that I will not get pregnant? Otherwise can I take Mitepristone (RU 486).

Hi,
Since you have passed your fertile dates, your chances of conceiving are rare. Marvelon can work as an emergency contraceptive in high doses, but the efficacy is not proved and the side effects can be expected to be more owing to the high doses needed to be given. Mifepristone is not a better alternative either. You can go for the emergency pill or get an IUD inserted as emergency contraception. The latter can be preferred if you already have children as it can be helpful for further contraception also. Hope this helps.
