Why Is Methylprednisolone Prescribed After Removal Of An Infected Tooth?

I had to remove a tooth today it caused infection in my gum and cheeks and my dentist after prescribed me amoxicillin and Methylprednisolone just wondering what s the purpose of the later since I read it may actually help increase the already bad infection ?

If you had an infected tooth that has been removed then antibiotics like Amoxicillin along with anti inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen is commonly sufficient and Methylprednisolone that is a steroid is given only if the swelling is severe and appears to be fatal..
Yes, steroids can lower down immunity and can worsen infection, therefore they should be advised only if it is too much needed..
So you should re-confirm with your dentist or an emergency doctor and in case if at all it is very much needed then only you can continue to take Methylprednisolone, otherwise you should take only antibiotics along with anti inflammatory painkillers like Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Diclofenac etc..
