Why Does An Ankle Fracture And Surgery Scab Take Time To Heal?
I broke my ankle on 8/16, had surgery in 8/26. About 4wks into my boot, I developed a fracture blister that became infected. I have type II diabetes and am 64 yrs old. The scab thathas formed still hasn t completely healed over. What is taking so long for the scab to heal and come off onits own?
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns. Diabetic individuals have an increased rate of colonization of S. aureus in the skinfolds . Diabetic patients also have a greater risk of wound infections The most common skin manifestations of DM are protracted wound healing and skin ulcerations. Strict glycemic control only reduces infections in diabetic individuals and can hasten the healing. Check your blood sugar again and adjust the dosage of oral anti-diabetics. Otherwise a short course of inj human rapid acting insulin will hasten the healing process.
