Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
if heavier weight people have a higher metabolic equivalent when calculating energy expenditure during exercise (MET x Body Weight = calorie expenditure) , then how come it is said it is said heavier people have slow metabolisms and burn off less calories during the course of a day.
There is more complexity to energy metabolism and predictive equations than thought. There is the issue of depending on the equation used, do you use ideal weight, adjusted body weight or actual body weight??? For example, the presence of white fat increases your body weight, but not metabolism. Why? White fat does not have mitochondria and it is the mitochondria that affect our metabolism among other things. I have had many patients calculate out as being able to lose 2 lbs based on the computer's calculations. I have taken the computer calculations by a few hundred calories and still didn't achieve weight loss goal. Now, heavier people who work out may weigh heavy but due to the high muscle, low % body fat, the calculations can be misleading unless you have been trained what to do starting with assessments. Also, did you use the levels associated with the type of activity? The METs biggest disadvantage is it doesn't take into account the starting basal energy requirements that differ from individual to individual. I hope that helps answer your question. If you need further help, please come back and visit with me. Or, I may be able to refer you to a local Dietitian if you give me your location. Thank you for asking HCM! Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN
