Why Did My Eyes Spasm After Taking Novocaine?

I went to the dentist today to fill a couple cavities. Almost immidiately after he injected the novocaine I felt a warm sensation through my cheek and then my eyes seemed as if they were spasming. My vision was bouncing from side to side and I couldn t control it. I don t think my eyeballs were actually moving at this point because I told the dentist what was happening and all he did was offered me gas. So I took the gas and even though it didn t stop the spasming right away it calmed me down enough to allow me to close my eyes and the dentist to start filling the cavities. My question is: What may have happened and could this cause future problems?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If I were your treating physician, I would suspect that after receiving Novocaine, your facial nerve which controls the eyelid movement may have not been completely anesthetized or could have gotten irritated. In both cases, flushing of the cheek and eye lid spasm may occur.

A simple dose adjustment and course correction of giving the local anaesthesia may be beneficial and this is probably the reason the dentist then compounded you with gas. There is nothing to worry as this is a normal side effect involved with Novocaine and in all probability it should be not be repeating in the future if medicine is administered correctly and in the right dose.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
