Why Am I Having Stabbing Pain In My Lower Left Abdomen?

On occasion I will get sharp stabbing pains in my lower left abdomen area. It never correlates with my period, or any specific time. It usually starts when I am leaning over and I try to sit up. The only thing that alleviates it is standing up and slowly breathing.
