When Will Side Effect Of Dilaudid IV Start Showing?

I was just given dilaudid IV push. The nurse pushed the med into my IV in approx 20-30 seconds. I almost immediately felt like I was going to pass out. Light headed, nauseated. I read that it should have been given over atleast a 2 min time frame. It been 2 hrs since I was given med. I am fearful to go to sleep. How soon would u stop breathing if that was a side effect u woukd have? I just had AP repair this am.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

For severe pain management, IV dose is preferred over oral IV dose given slowly over a period of 2-3 minutes.

In your case its quite unusual to give it in 20 -30 seconds. Anyway, don't worry about nausea. You have to lie down for at least 1-2 hour after dosing with almost little to no head movement.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pragnesh Limbachiya,
