When Is Surgery Necessary For Diverticulitis?

I have been experiencing 2 episodes a year of diverticulitis and being treated with antibotics. The last time was in May 2015 and my gastro Dr. is recomending surgery and would like me to consult with a surgeon that he would recommend. What is your opinion? Thank you Linda McAfee

Hi,

Surgery for diverticulitis is needed only during emergency or when medical treatment fails. Surgery may be required when you experience multiple episodes uncontrolled by medications. CT abdomen may be required to assess any changes.

Emergencies include bowel obstruction, perforation and signs of sepsis. Surgery should be done in all these conditions. I would suggest you to discuss with your surgeon regarding whether elective surgery is required.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
