What Type Of Reaction Is Getting A Fever To A Penicillin Dose Considered?

A 44-year-old man is given an intramuscular high dose of penicillin. About 8 days later, he develops chills, fever and a rash, If his symptoms are due to an immune reaction to the drug, what type of reaction is this considered? I have a debate regarding it being either type 3 or type 4 hypersensitivity........

Hello,

If the patient has allergy to penicillin, it develops immediately after injecting penicillin. Even if it is delayed hypersensitivity, it would develop within 72 hours of the injection. Rash and chills along with fever after 8 days of intramuscular injection of penicillin is not due to hypersensitivity to penicillin.

The patient has developed either some other allergy or the disease for which penicillin is given is not cured and there are symptoms of that. I would advise you to visit the doctor again regarding the symptoms and get the patient physically examined. Blood tests might be required.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
