What To Do If Having Cold Sweats, Breathing Trouble While Tapering Off Of Hydromorphone?

I am tapering off a very high dose of hydromorphone (75mg/day). Over almost 6 weeks I have achieved 12 mg/day and it appears to be getting harder rather than easier. Last night during an episode of cold sweats I had some breathing trouble and irregular, slow heartbeat which resolved fairly quickly. How do I successfully taper off the remaining 12 mg/day? I use Ativan to help me sleep and relax me.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

You are having withdrawal symptoms, as Hydromorphone has psychological and physical dependence with chronic use. Withdrawal should be slower under the care of a Psychiatrist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Tushar Kanti Biswas, Internal Medicine Specialist
