What Precautions Should Be Taken During Tooth Extraction Of A Person With Factor V Leiden?

My son is heterozygous for Factor V Leiden. (So are both his dad and I; I have never clotted nor has my son; my husband has had clots and is on coumadin.) Other than the oral surgeon just being aware of this, is there anything special they have to do or be worried about when they remove his wisdom teeth? (I have had a Csec and a gall bladder removed after finding out, and had no problems and little extra done, because I have not clotted. But the oral surgeon office seemed to know nothing about FVL.)

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your son have symptoms of wisdom tooth pain and you want to get it extracted. As your son is positive and heterozygous for Factor V Leiden which means there increases in susceptibility to blood clots which is 5 to 7 fold increased risk for developing a thrombosis and in homozygous people it is 20-25 times increased. Need not to worry. You should get procedure done as less traumatic as possible. You need to take prophylactic antibiotics before the procedures. I would suggest you to consult a good oral maxillofacial surgeon and you can get tooth removed. You should get complete blood investigations done including blood count, CBC, INR. If the INR is normal then no need to worry.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
