What Medication Do You Suggest For Shingles ?

Hi, I was diagnosed with shingles by an FNP and started on acyclovir. My throat started to swell after 3 doses, went to urgent care who said it was a staph and wants to start clindamycin. Neither did a swab. What do I do now? I really am hesitant to start and antibiotic if it is viral. I am also very anxious about trying a new antibiotic that I have not been on before.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thank you for asking Healthcare Magic.
With this presentation, I think it is a case of infectious mononucleosis. There is no specific treatment for it other than treating the symptoms. Steroids may be prescribed for 5 days to control swelling at the level of the throat and acetaminophen if there is fever. Antibiotics and antiviral drugs are not necessary.

I hope that answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. We will be delighted to answer more questions from you.
I wish you good health
