What Leads To Fluctuations In The BP Level Post Gall Bladder Removal?

My friend just had surgery to remove his gallbladder, a portion of his stomach, colon and pancreas because of cancer. He came through the surgery well except for some extensive unanticipated damage to an artery. He has been in ICU since last night. Now his blood pressure is fluctuating and insulin is being administered because his pancreas is not functioning properly at this time. My questions are: why the fluctuating BP and will his pancreas once again function normally?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Post surgery, the blood pressure may fall or show fluctuations in case there has been severe blood loss or fluid loss during surgery. The patient may be in hypovolemic shock and hence the blood pressure or the other vitals may not function normally. Since a part of the pancreas has been removed, artificial insulin injections and digestive enzymes need to be given for him to recover and survive. Post surgery it all depends on the recovery, if the recovery is good then the organs do function appropriately. Recovery may take time.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
