Hi,

Some common reasons are:

- Deep vein Thrombosis (DVT)
- Cellulitis
- Peripehal vascular disease
- Lymphedema

There are certain rare conditions which are:

- Polymyositis
- Dermatomyositis
- Connective tissue disease

Having a positive outlook, ,DVT is the most common reason. For this the doctor would suggest certain test like Ultrasonography, Venography depending on the presentation.Till then your dad can dip his legs in warm water bath to relieve pain. Leg elevation, ankle toe movements are some remedies that will give relief.

Hope this helps you. Let me know if I can assist you further.
