What Is The Treatment For Headache In A Child?

My 4 year old daughter came home from preschool and was complaining her head hurt and that she couldn t lay on her pillow. I felt around her head and she has a large goose egg on the back of her head right where the skull meets the back of the neck. I asked her what happened and she told me she was hanging on a bar and her hands slipped and she fell and hit her head. She says it hurts to touch. I didn t recognize any other symptoms but do you think I should take her to the ER to get evaluated?

Hi, thanks for asking form HCM.

I can understand your concern. The head injury of your child seems mild as she is conscious
she is able to move, talk, having no deficit
she is having headache only. There was no vomiting

So you can wait and observe her at home. If she develops
: Vomiting
: seizures
: bleed through ear/nose/throat
: focal deficit
: persistent headache not responding to painkillers
You must consult ER as soon as possible. The doctor will evaluate her and may advise CT head to rule out bleed/fracture. Fracture is usually managed conservatively while bleed may require surgery.

If no above sign, you can follow few tips for pain and bump relief
: Apply icepacks at bump
: Keep her head at higher level than chest
: Avoid pressure at injury site
: You can give her syrup Ibuprofen after proper prescription
: swelling and pain will resolve on its own in 10-14 days

Hope it will help her. thanks, take care.
