What Is The Recovery Time For Tibia And Fibula Fracture?

My 20 yr old daughter fell rock climbing in Ok--she is a student at ORU--this was thursday evening--surgery was just completed in Tulsa, OK just now--3/16/15 @ 4:30 pm CST--A rod along the Tibia to the ankle and a lg screw/pin securing the Tibia/Fibula down by the ankle--both bones were fractured in her fall--I live in MN and have not talked with the surgeon yet--what is the "usual" recovery time for this type of injury? Thanks! Sharon Carlson

Hello my friend
I am Dr.Arianisa
Thanks for your question on HCM

If it is an uncomplicated fracture of each and immobilised properly, they will take 6 weeks to heal.
If the fractures involve the shaft of the bones, healing can take months.
The tibia can be a very slow bone to heal.
Usually it takes 12 weeks. But depending on the person it may vary. But my honest suggestion is wait for at least 4 month. Don't do x-ray of your daughter leg too often.
Your orthopedic surgeon will take x-rays to evaluate healing and is the best person to tell you how long it might take. Typically she is a non weight bearing during the early phases of healing.

Hope this information is helpful and hope your daughter get better soon
Best regards
