What Is The Reason For Breathing Difficulty While Engaged In Physical Activity?

My daughter is very athletic and in two Gaelic Football matches recently she had to come off after about 20 mins. because she could not breathe. She has been checked out and so far they can find no lung or heart problems. SHe was at study last Sunday and said that she was breating very heavily.

Cardiologist 's  Response
Dear mother,

Thanks for the query. It is unusual indeed and warrants further investigation; a very detailed physical examination should be performed, looking for heart murmurs, and she would need at a minimum an ECG and perhaps an Echocardiogram or ultrasound of the heart. If no rhythm problems or structural cardiac disease is found, then the probabilities of her shortness of breath being cardiac are low given her young age, and can certainly prove reassuring.

Hope that helps, wish you the best,
