What Is The Purpose Of Induced Coma In A Diabetic And BP Patient?

My voice Professor an African American man age 57 had diabetis and high blood pressure. The Doctor he told me told him he needed to lose 100 lbs. He was a tall big boned man and did not seem like a fat man but I don't know what happened, In August Iheard he collapsed teaching a student. He was in I.C.U. and I went 1 time there to see him and he was on a ventilator. I waited for him to get a room of his own and his wife would let us know how he was progressing. I seen him the last time and he had a big grin and he had ventilator this time in his throat trachea. He understood me and did not seem in coherent. He was discharged from that hospital after 3 months and in the morning his wife said he was ready to start rehabilitation. I received another update 4 hours later and she said "I'm sad to say Derrick had a cardio pulmonary arrest while rehabilitating and they did not know why and he was now in an induced coma and no visitors. I am stunned and he was my friend. FIrst do you think he had a stroke? Dibetis causes all kinds of complications I know that. Why did he colapse at rehab? Why induce a coma? What do you think the prognosis is for Derrick? I also don't know if the ventilator is needed all the time beause I once asked a nurse "oh your going to wean him off that "? She said "yes" well at least we hope too" well I don't know" What do you think happened to my Professor Derrick and do you think he will live?

Diabetologist 's  Response
Dear friend, Greetings from HCM... i appreciate your concern for your teacher.... in diabetes there are various causes for coma ... most common reason is hypoglycemia and a dangerous one too... seen mostly in patients on insulin inj... they take insulin but they forget their meal ... next is that diabetic ketoacidosis ... or hyperosmolar coma, here pateints will be dehydrated with very high sugar levels and electrolyte imbalance
To prevent coma in diabetics they need to keep a tract of their blood sugar ... take medicines in time and food also ... regular check ups ... please do contact for more queries ... take care
