What Is The Prognosis For Bipolar Disorder?

My partner of 13 years had been diagnosed with bi polar many years ago however came off the meds a long time ago. 4 weeks ago following my having a hysterectomy he walked out & to be with someone else that he had met a few weeks before this despite us being in a wonderful loving relationship (he was sure & extremely worried that during my surgery the doctor was going to find cancer & that I was going to die as there is a family history). Since then he came back and left again twice & has been manic, irrational, anxious & suicidal & living rough, all the symptoms of bipolar/manic depression. He has now started on meds & counselling however his behaviour is still crazy & there is no sign of him to level out whatsoever, I'm afraid this is going to end badly as he appears to be in self destruct mode & even this evening was sending me abusive messages & shortly thereafter apologising! I'm worried for his welfare and at this stage my own. Im the only person who ever helped him as he has no family support or friends and now only has this rebound relationship as a support however there is nothing more I can do for him....At this stage I believe he may need hospitalisation in order to get help however he will not agree to this. What will happen to him if he doesnt get the help.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Bipolar disorder can be severe and long-term, or it can be mild with infrequent episodes. Patients with the disease may experience symptoms in very different ways. A typical patient with bipolar disorder averages 8 - 10 manic or depressive episodes over a lifetime. However, some people experience more and some fewer episodes.
now a days most patients with bipolar disorder can live a normal life. however regular visit to psychiatrist, having regular sleep-wake schedule, avoidance of any addiction and most importantly taking medication as advised by psychiatrist is very important.

the effect of bipolar mood disorder on longevity is indirect. Medical evidence has shown that patients with bipolar disorder have higher death rates from suicide, heart problems, and death from all causes than those in the general population. Patients who get treatment, however, experience great improvement in survival rates.
