What Is The Effect Of Long Term Use Of Coumadin?

Hi, My mother has been on Coumadin for over 10 years. Can you please tell me if this is a medication that she will need to be on for the rest of her life? She had colon cancer, and she also had a blood clot after having the surgery for that cancer. She has been on Coumadin since that time, and I m just wondering if that s necessary.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi!
I really appreciate your concern for your mother.
Nothing to worry, if the lab investigations like Prothrombin time and INR are maintained in their normal ranges, Coumadin can be a safer drug.
However it is known to cause the following side effects:
Bleeding ( which can be minimized by maintaining normal blood tests)
Fat necrosis involving skin, breast, fatty tissues.
skin changes, or discoloration anywhere on your body;
Since you have not mentioned the age of your mother, Coumadin is not safe during pregnancy.
Besides, coumadin can produce harmful reactions if given with some other drugs which may increase or decrease its effects.
Regards.
