What Is The Effect Of Metronidazole On HPV Infection?
I was diagnosed with having vaginal bacteria and prescribed metronidazole for 1 week. 3 weeks later, I received test results which stated that I have HPV. What is the effect of metronidazole on HPV? I only have 1 partner. Does that mean that I contracted it from him, that he s a carrier?
Hello and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Perhaps you had 'bacterial vaginosis' (BV) for which you are prescribed metronidazole. Bacterial Vaginosis is an alteration of the vaginal flora and change in vaginal PH. Vaginal flora which is predominantly lactobacillus is replaced by anaerobes in BV. A new sexual partner or frequent sex are possible causes of BV wherein there is an increase in vaginal discharge which is grayish/dirty and foul smelling. It is not an STD. On the other hand, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection is an STD and metronidazole has absolutely no effect on it. HPV infection is always acquired from an infected sexual partner who is a carrier.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you need any more assistance.
