What Is The Cause Of Bouts Of Constipation In A Child?

Hi doctor. My grand daughter, aged 2 and a half years Approximately, is having frequent bouts of constipation. She gets relief after administering with some laxatives, prescribed by the doctors. What can I do to save her from persistent/intermittent constipation. deepak chatta

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In this age, if this is the constipation, then it must be due to diet only. So first thing you need to do is to change the diet. Put her on high fiber containing diet, avoid giving tin foods or junk foods, encourage her for drinking water and include vegetables with diet. It is best advisable to avoid the laxative in this age but you can try Sorbitol. It is completely okay if the child does not pass stools for a day or two.

Hope this information helps.
