What Is The Cause For Red Spots On Top Of My Toes That Hurts When I Walk?

Recently I started getting swollen spots on the tops or sides of my toes usually around my cuticle. They are red, hot to the touch, and hurt when I walk or push on them. Then after a few days they go away. I have recently tried cream for athlete's foot thinking that was the problem, but it hasn't really helped. Any ideas what could be the problem?

Hi. Thanks for posting your concern at HCM

I would keep a possibility of either Paronychia OR Chilblains.

Paronychia is inflammation and swelling of the soft tissue surrounding the nail and nail bed. It can be acute or more commonly chronic in people who are exposed to wet work for prolonged periods like in food handlers, housewives etc. As a result of prolonged wet work the cuticle gets macerated and allows a portal for entry of candida and bacteria leading to inflammation.

Treatment is avoiding wet work for long durations and using an antifungal (oral + topical antifungal) for a few months so that cuticle can regenerate back and inflammation and infection is kept at bay.

Chilblains or Perniosis is due to exposure to cold conditions and causes inflammation, redness, swelling and pruritus on rewarming of the peripheries (fingers and toes). It is due to hyperactive vasculature (vasoconstriction to low temperature).

Treatment is wearing layered clothing and protecting the self from cold.

The redspots are painfull with raised temperature. It indicates an inflamatery neuropathy self limiting with relapse. It appears to be an autoimune disorder.Do complete blood analysis, RA factor. Analise report and consult a physician. It is definitely not athalets foot.
