What Is The Cause For Large Nose Bleed?

Hi, My 89 year old father all of a sudden is having trouble with getting his words out. He also had a very large nose bleed the other night. Can you give me some advice to why all of a sudden these things are happening. His health seems to be fairly good.

Nose bleeds in elderly patients like your father is usually because of hypertension.Since there is no history of previous nasal bleeds, nasal trauma or prolonged intake of blood thinning medicines like aspirin, get the blood pressure checked. Also rule out diabetes. You can give him otrivin nasal drops but do consult an ENT physician to check his nose,if there is any local pathology.Don't panic if bleeding recurs, just pinch the nose for some time.If it does not stop then consult an ENT physician for nasal packing or endoscopic ligation of bleeders.
Do take opinion from a Neurologist for speech difficulty as there may be chances of stroke in this age.
