What Is The Best Medicine For Depression?

My husband is 40 years old, and we have been in hospital almost a week now...hopefully tomorrow they release him. He is very depressed, and didnt know if antidepressant would be good for him. Also, im totally lost on what I can cook for him now? ?? No salt at all? Oŕ just lower the take of salt . Thanks ashannon

Thanks for writing.The information you are providing is not sufficient.More information needed in terms of episodes,severity,reason for admission etc.In general antidepressant takes approx.15 days to start its effect so one week is not sufficient to see the outcome of medicine.You can serve him anything he likes .Salt is not restricted in depression.

Dear Ashannon,
I understand your concerns for your husband.

Why no salt? Depression is not a contraindication for salt intake.
You can give him whatever he likes to eat.
Increase green leafy vegetables and fruits in diet.

Coming to the drug treatment, antidepressants must be given to him if he is severely depressed.
I personally have good experience with escitalopram, paroxetine and sertraline. They work well.
The treatment should not be delayed.
The response to drug varies from person to person and may take time.
