Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son, 20 years old resting heart rate 117, although it s traditionally higher than average, 90. Non verbal ASD but doesn t look sick. Not on medication but various doctor monitored supplements. What cardiac testing shoukd be done if this has been fluctuating for several years so far?
ECG or electrocardiogram is the first investigation of choice. It can detect irregularities in heart rate and conduction. Normal heart rate lies between the range of 60 to 90 beats per minute. There are certain conditions such as sinus tacycardia where even though heart rate is higher than normal, it is considered harmless and does not require any treatment. Next step is to proceed with echocardiogram which reports the cardiac muscle, valve abnormalities and overall cardiac performance from which further management can be decided.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
