What Is An Alternative Of Carvedilol For The Treatment Of Heart Disorder?

HI, I am taking carvediolol 3.25 mg twice a day to help my heart beat slower. I ve been on it for about 2 months..first side effects were dizziness and headache--that went away after about three weeks. Now for the last month, I have joint pain in my big toes with swelling and foot and leg stiffness and pain. I recall now that I was on beta blocker a number of years ago and ended up with the same symptoms that I have now. I put a call into my doctor to see if I could get switched to another medicine that is not a satin drug. Apparently I am sensitive to this. Also feel puffy all over and have gained weight. I generally am fatigued and don t feel like myself. Can you suggest some other kind of medicine? and do I have to taper off of this medicine gradually? I am 69 years old and in good health. I exercise daily but with the joint pain it has slowed me down a lot.

Hello,

Carvedilol does rarely cause joint pain, and if you had this experience before I would also suspect this is the cause of your pain. It depends on what your doctor was using Carvedilol to treat, but another class of medication that can often be used instead of Carvedilol to slow the heart rate is a calcium channel blocker med like Diltiazem or Verapamil. You normally do not need to taper off Carvedilol but I would talk with your doctor before stopping.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
