Hello, just have some concerns regarding my mother s new medication. She just had a mild stroke last Monday. She is able to talk but has some difficulty getting out some words she wanted to say. She is still alert and oriented x3 but has difficulty saying what is in her mind at times and pronouncing words. A neurologist had seen her and ordered Aricept. Do you think she really need this medication at this time? I m afraid of the side effect of it. will she be taking this medication forever? What is your opinion or advise. Thanks a lot.

Considering her past medical history, it seems that your mother is having memory and speech problems related to the stroke. In this regard, Aricept seems to be a good treatment choice to help her during this period of time. Other possible treatment options would be Piracetam or Cerebrolysin. Anyway, their effects on the memory are not so high compared to Aricept. The same is for their adverse effects. You should discuss with her doctor on the above treatment options. Hope you will find this answer helpful! Best wishes!
